Hip Hop Artist Common to Host AT&T’s 28 Days PDF Print E-mail

AT&T 28 Days – a Black History Month campaign that aims to motivate consumers to use their voice, share their vision and move into action this February and throughout the year. This year's AT&T 28 Days campaign will feature a seven-city speaker series tour with award-winning hip-hop artist, actor, author and activist Common serving as host. "We are now in the fourth year of AT&T 28 Days and we continue to recognize past achievements while engaging and challenging consumers to make their own history today," said Jennifer Jones, vice president of Diverse Markets, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. "We want to connect with consumers, especially youth, in relevant ways and extend the AT&T 28 Days live experience into new markets."

Four new cities were added to this year's AT&T 28 Days speaker series: Dallas, Texas; Raleigh, N.C.; Cleveland, Ohio; and Detroit, Mich. Common also returns as host of the speaker series which features some of today's influential and respected leaders offering their own unique perspectives to inspire consumers to use their voices, creative visions and actions to shape their own future.

This year, AT&T 28 Days debuts in AT&T's corporate headquarter location in Dallas, Texas at the House of Blues on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 16. The keynote speaker for the Dallas event is technology commentator and digital lifestyle expert Mario Armstrong.

Other speakers and stops on the seven-city AT&T 28 Days speaker series tour include:

•Holly Robinson Peete, actress, author and activist; Wednesday, Feb. 1 in Oakland, Calif.; Scottish Rite Center

•Kevin Powell, political activist and author of "Barack Obama, Ronald Reagan, and The Ghost of Dr. King"; Wednesday, Feb. 8 in Raleigh, N.C.; Fletcher Opera Theater

•Mario Armstrong, tech commentator and digital lifestyle expert; Wednesday, Feb. 15 in Washington, D.C.; Howard University-Cramton Auditorium

•Jeff Johnson, social activist and political commentator; Monday, Feb. 20 in Cleveland, Ohio; Ohio Theatre

•Desiree Rogers, innovative leader and bold visionary; Thursday, Feb. 23 in Chicago, Ill.; Park West Theatre

•Michael Eric Dyson, author, scholar and cultural critic; Wednesday, Feb. 29 in Detroit, Mich.; Shriners Silver Garden Events Center

The speaker series events are free and open to the general public. Tickets are available at att.com/28days on a first come first serve basis. In addition, three of the speaker series events will be streamed live at facebook.com/att28days. The featured speakers for each city on the tour and the live streaming schedule will be announced at a future date via att.com/28days. Those in attendance at each speaker series event will have the opportunity to hear Common perform live.

With a new campaign rhythm, AT&T has included an interactive sweepstakes on att.com/28days, that will interface with Facebook and Twitter, for consumers to share comments and photos about AT&T 28 Days. Consumers posting comments and photos will be entered for a chance to win technology prizes and autographed copies of Common's new book, 'One Day It Will All Make Sense' and latest CD, 'The Dreamer, The Believer'. Prizes will be drawn weekly and consumers will be allowed one entry per person.

Guitar Center enters 2012 with the launch of the next installment of the music retailer's inspirational artist discovery program, Guitar Center Presents Your Next Record with T-Pain. The ground-breaking, career-altering program, which begins accepting submissions on Feb. 1st, will offer one emerging artist the unprecedented opportunity to record with Grammy winning artist, writer, rapper and producer, T-Pain. As this series' host of Guitar Center Presents Your Next Record, T-Pain joins the ranks of previous hosts including legendary artists Slash, Keith Urban, and most recently, Travis Barker.

How to Enter: Starting today through April 4, 2012, unsigned artists across the United States, are invited to submit their unique music track at http://tpain.whooznxt.com/.

How the Competition Works
Unsigned artists have up to nine weeks to submit their original track via Guitar Center's Your Next Record website http://tpain.whooznxt.com/. Guitar Center has commissioned leading online music company NXTM and will utilize their Whooznxt social media ranking platform to host and judge the first round. Competing artists will be ranked on how well they're able to connect with fans through social media. T-Pain and an expert panel of judges will select one winner to receive the grand prize from among the top 100 ranked entries.

Hip hop artist T-Pain, aka Faheem Rasheed Najm, is a Grammy winning, platinum-selling artist, writer, rapper and producer who has produced and written a plethora of chart-topping and platinum-selling singles, garnered "Songwriter of the Year" and "Producer of the Year" honors at the BMI Urban Awards and earned a BET Award. T-Pain has earned two Grammy Awards alongside artists Kanye West and Jamie Foxx.

Internationally renowned drummer Travis Barker jumped into the fray on the most recent installment of Guitar Center's Your Next Record, choosing Connecticut based band Twin Berlin as the Grand Prize Winner. During the second session of the groundbreaking program singer-songwriter Brandon Green received a phone call from Keith Urban informing him that he had been hand selected as the winner. Green's single "Love Lovin' You" featuring Keith Urban will be released this fall. Guitar Center's inaugural session featured legendary guitarist Slash. The winning band, State Line Empire, released their single "Drive Me" recorded with the iconic guitarist in March of 2011.

Guitar Center's commitment to unsigned artists runs deep with a full calendar year of programs that aim to provide musicians with the opportunity and exposure they need to be successful. In addition to Guitar CenterSinger-Songwriter, these include:

  • Guitar Center On-Stage is an annual competition that provides unsigned artist that chance to open for established artists such as Motley Crue, KISS and Jane's Addiction.
  • Guitar Center Singer-Songwriter is an artist discovery program which aims to find the nation's best unsigned singer-songwriter. The winner receives a career-altering prize package including recording 3 songs with accomplished Grammy Award-winning Producer John Shanks, recording time at Converse Rubber Tracks studio and $10,000 cash. The grand finale takes place in Los Angeles on Feb. 18.
  • Guitar Center's King of the Blues is a nationwide amateur guitar skills competition with the goal of finding the next great undiscovered blues guitar player. This year's winner, Jonathon "Boogie" Long, performed alongside Grammy-winning guitarist Warren Haynes at the Grand Finals in LA, and won an incredible prize package valued at over $50,000.
  • Guitar Center's Drum-Off, entering its 24th year, is the nationwide search for the next great undiscovered drummer. Drummers from across the nation compete in the world's largest drum competition, vying for thousands of dollars in prizes and the coveted title of Guitar Center's Drum-Off Champion. The grand prize package is valued at nearly $50,000.

Martin Luther King III, member of the Founding Group and Board of Directors for Bounce TV, the country's first and fast-growing over-the-air broadcast television network for African-Americans, announced today that the network will present the broadcast television premiere of the acclaimed documentary Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Historical Perspective this Monday, January 16 at 8:00 p.m. ET in honor of the national Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

"This year's holiday will be even more special to our family as it will be the first Martin Luther King, Jr. Day that my father's memorial in Washington is open and Bounce TV is on the air. I believe both were and are important milestones for our community," commented Mr. King III.

The award-winning Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Historical Perspective offers a unique examination Dr. King's impact on the country and the civil rights movement. Writer/director Thomas Friedman takes a look at Reverend King's ideas, actions, and influence on the fight to end racial segregation. The 60 minute documentary includes rare archival footage, photographs, and interviews with associates of Dr. King. Bounce TV will present a special encore of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Historical Perspective immediately after its premiere.

Bounce TV airs twenty four hours a day, seven days a week on the digital signals of local television stations. The network targets African Americans primarily between the ages of 25-54 with a programming mix of theatrical motion pictures, live sports, documentaries, specials, inspirational faith-based programs, off-net series, original programming and more. Live sports and events are part of the Bounce TV schedule, including both football and basketball games from the nation's largest African American athletic conference, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA.) Bounce TV's first CIAA basketball game will air this Sat. Jan. 14 as Shaw University visits Chowan.

Dr. King's close friend and associate Ambassador Andrew Young is also among the Founding Group and Board of Directors of Bounce TV. Bounce TV is majority African American-owned. Toyota USA is the signature sponsor of the network.

You may remember California R&B singer TQ from his hit single "Westside" or his days as Cash Money's primary songwriter and hook man. Penning such hits as "Way of Life" with Lil Wayne and numerous compositions with Mannie Fresh, The Hot Boys, and the Birdman, TQ is back with a new take on the Eagles classic "Hotel California". The new video which is available on TQ's YouTube channel TQtheTrojan, was directed by newcomer Nathaniel "Sith" Nuon and gives a new twist on this legendary story. "We wanted to go way out on this music video." explains TQ. "After researching the lyrics and the story behind them, we found so many different interpretations that we decided to come up with our own. Sith is a madman as you can see... And this is only part one!"

The new single is available for free download for the first week of 2012 across the net. TQ's new label Kado Records is planning a full promotional tour in the US and abroad to support the record which will be going out to radio later this month. TQ is also in the studio creating a new remix for the single which will hit the net in a few weeks and his new album "Legendary" due out later this year.
