Compton, California is well known in hip-hop culture from tracks like ‘Straight Outta Compton’ by early rap icons NWA; whose members included all legendary rap artists like Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Mc Ren, Yella and Dr. Dre. More recently, rap artist The Game hails from Compton. And now there is Winston Hayes who is putting Compton back in the news.

During a chase, deputies shot more than 90 rounds at a sport-utility vehicle that they thought had been involved in a shooting Monday, police said.

The driver, Winston Hayes, 44; and a sheriff's deputy were wounded, police said.

The 15-minute chase began after police responded to a report that shots had been fired in a Compton neighborhood known for gang-related shootings. They tried to pull over an SUV that had been reported loitering in the neighborhood, but the car sped away.

It stopped after spikes flattened its tires. A videotape showed 10 deputies surrounding the SUV and then firing a barrage of gunfire at the vehicle after it lurched forward and hit a squad car, police said.

The driver, who was thought to be under the influence of drugs, was shot four times, Sheriff Lee Baca said. He was hospitalized with wounds that were not life-threatening.

No weapon was found in the SUV.
