About the Author

Andrew B. Stroud was born on a family farm in Halifax County, Virginia, in 1925, the sixth of eight children. The farm is still under family operation today. Andy's family moved to Hudson, New York, where he grew up. He served in the U.S. Navy in the band department during WWII until his honorable discharge in 1946. In 1948 he joined the NYPD and was promoted to detective after three years. He was awarded numerous decorations for meritorious service and promoted to Supervising Detective Sargeant. He met Nina Simone in March 1961 and they were married nine months later.
