KOCH Records announces the release of the soundtrack to the Oscar-winning documentary, "Born into Brothels" on December 13th, 2005. The "Born into Brothels" soundtrack contains original music from the film by composer John McDowell. Several unreleased tracks by the same composer are included as well as two Bollywood tracks from the film "Mohabbatein." McDowell gathered an amazing ensemble of musicians that infused this acoustic score with depth and soul. The recording features vocalist Sabina Sciubba from the Brazilian Girls, chanting master Krishna Das, bamboo virtuoso Steve Gorn, jazz legend Cameron Brown on bass, Ty Burhoe on tabla, John Vartan on Armenian deduk, and many more world musicians. John McDowell performs and records with artists ranging from Sting, Carlos Santana and Rusted Root and has been heard at Lincoln Center, the Montreal Jazz Festival and at music festivals throughout Europe, Africa and North America. The film "Born into Brothels," by Ross Kauffman and Zana Briski, is the winner of the 77th annual Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and over 25 other prestigious international film awards. A tribute to the resiliency of childhood and the restorative power of art, "Born into Brothels" is a portrait of several unforgettable children who live in the red light district of Calcutta, where their mothers work as prostitutes. Zana Briski, a New York-based photographer, gives each of the children a camera and teaches them to look at the world with new eyes. The film, released by THINKFilm, premiered theatrically at the Film Forum in New York City in December 2004. It has since opened in over one hundred theaters nationwide. It premiered on HBO/Cinemax in August and is schedule to run throughout the fall. The DVD was released on September 20th, 2005. |
