Grammy winner Roberta Flack will perform a concert to benefit Dillard University’s scholarship program at the New Orleans Convention Center at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 18, 2007.

“We are very excited and extremely honored to host Ms. Flack during her stay in New Orleans and look forward to her sharing her extraordinary talent with our community,” said Marvalene Hughes, Ph.D., President of Dillard University.

When Flack performed at a benefit concert in Washington, D.C. for the Inner City Ghetto Children’s Library Fund, jazz pianist and vocalist Les McCann said “Her voice touched, tapped, trapped and kicked every emotion I’ve ever known. I laughed, cried and screamed for more…she alone had the voice!” It was McCann who originally discovered Flack and was responsible for her original audition with Atlantic Records.

Notable in the areas of jazz, soul and folk, Flack is well known for top hits such as “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” and “Tonight I Celebrate My Love.” Her single and record title, “Killing Me Softly with His Song,” won the 1974 Grammy for Record of the Year.

Flack so excelled at classical piano during her early teens that Howard University awarded her a full music scholarship. She matriculated at Howard at the age of fifteen, making her one of the youngest students ever to enroll there. Before graduating at age nineteen, she switched her major from piano to voice. Her first big hit came in 1972, when Clint Eastwood chose her song, “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” for the soundtrack of his directorial debut Play Misty for Me. It would become her first number one hit.

In 1999, Flack received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. That same year, she gave a concert in South Africa, which was attended by President Nelson Mandela.

Tickets will go on sale Friday, March 30 via Ticketmaster. All seats are reserved and tickets are limited. Princes range from $45 to $150. All gifts, donations and ticket sales are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law.
