International Association for Hip Hop Education Conference in DC

The International Association for Hip Hop Education 2nd Annual IAHHE Conference 2008 will start at 8pm on Thursday evening with an informal get together at Mahogany 11th and U Streets, NW Washington, DC for executive and advisory board members, and panelists.

 

Then on Friday at 8am registration will begin for the conference to last until noon. The workshops and panels will begin at 9am and will last until noon as well. At noon there will be a lunch reception and a keynote address will be delivered by Scholar, Performer and Educator Kyra Gaunt; topic - Race, Gender and Hip hop: A Musical / Performative Pedagogy for the Oppressed and Not-So-Oppressed. Then there will be a cipher that will last until 2pm.

 

The cipher will be a freestyle session where conference participants will revisit the African tradition of communal creation. The cipher will feature hip hop MCs freestyling, beats from producers and DJs, and artwork by graffiti artists, that will help build on the themes and discussions addressed during the day. The conference will end at 3:30pm and conference attendees can find dinner options in the area at the surrounding restaurants.

10:00-11:00am - Jared Ball, Ph.D.:The Crisis of the Hip Hop Intellectual

11:00am-12:00pm - Tanji Gilliam: That Crack in the Concrete: Hip hop, Politics and the Archive in Black Urban Video Culture

1:00-2:00pm Cipher

2:00-3:30pm Carol O'Connor - Effective Training in the Hip hop Era
