Why use others content?
Using content from other sites is a way of referencing a article which you think may be of interest to future and current visitors within your own site. Since there is no such thing as a permanent URL for anything online, we save an archived copy of the article someone else wrote and clearly reserve a section at the immediate end of the article labeled “Source” with the site name and a link to the page where the article was originally published.
Linking and citing the original source allows the visitor to visit the source and see if they trust the source. This doesn't mean the site owner that copied the content agrees or condones the article content. It just means that the site owner thought it was of reading interest to the public and it’s the reader’s decision to accept the article as fact or fiction.
How to source content
Place a regular sized text label or image stating the source is directly after or beneath the clearly marked source label. Hyperlinks back to the original content are important to show exactly where and how the content was copied or altered. Examples below:
Source: ThugLifeArmy
Source:
ThugLifeArmy
Who is the original source?
When you find an article on a site which sources other sites, in order to bypass the middle source that the content was found on, you must visit the original content URL and gather the content straight from the source you are citing. Sites may alter content in the process of publishing to their own site like changing the title, or coping the content to show only a specific section which was of interest.
If you copy a sites alteration, you must source the site which you directly copied the content. If ThugLifeArmy had a slimed down version of an MTV article or an altered title, the source for the article would be ThugLifeArmy if the final content was taken from ThugLifeArmy. If you find an article on ThugLifeArmy that was taken from MTV and you visit the source MTV and copied the content from their URL, the source would be MTV.
