Tupac Shakur is one of the most influential rappers of all time, known for his progressive lyricism, impactful sound, and role in shaping the direction of hip-hop. Although he died in 1996, he continues to be a source of inspiration and fascination to audiences around the globe. Noisey was provided previously unreleased handwritten poetry through our friends Citizens of Humanity by his first manager, Leila Steinberg. The poems, written over a three year period starting when the rapper was 17, offer a glimpse of Tupac before many people knew him. With the hope of beginning to understand the significance of Tupac Shakur on today's modern world, we asked writer Jeff Weiss, who co-wrote 2Pac vs. Biggie: An Illustrated History of Rap's Greatest Battle, to pen an essay on why we care.

If you want to understand 2Pac, abandon the delusion that there’s one 2Pac to understand. Some called him a chameleon, but its better to process him as the rap game magic lantern—a vessel to project any shape, impeccable at throwing shade. Revolutionary ideals and gangsta nihilism were props, sincere and passionate ones, but capable of being discarded when it came to shoot the next scene.

The early details of his life seem so preordained that you’d think they came from an animated Disney boy-to-king film scripted by Huey Newton. Most of his mother’s pregnancy was spent in solitary confinement, while she awaited trial for conspiring to blow up multiple federal landmarks. His Godfather was Black Panther potentate, Geronimo Pratt. He was ferried into hip-hop on a King’s rickshaw in the video for Digital Underground’s “Same Song.” Yes, a fucking rickshaw.

Digital Underground back-up dancers shouldn’t become the most influential ever, but nothing about this makes logical sense in 2014. The best artists are willfully elusive. Some create myths of childhood fantasy; others just stumble into some corkscrew of divinity. All are too complicated to be compartmentalized. 2Pac’s greatest trick was convincing people that he was exactly like them, until he wasn’t.

Originally named Lesane Crooks, his mother quickly re-christened him Tupac Amaru Shakur. The re-branding gave him alias of the last Incan emperor, who upon execution by the Spanish declared: “Mother Earth, witness how my enemies shed my blood.” Basically, Tupac’s namesake did everything short but tell Habsburg emperor Phillip II, “I fucked your bitch, you fat motherfucker.”

Raised in New York, Baltimore, and Oakland, 2Pac was one of the first stylistically rootless rappers. Aggressiveness trumped aesthetic. He was the diaspora incarnate. In a 1992 Source feature, he claimed that the Geto Boys’ Grip It On That Other Level was his favorite rap album ever. He lived part-time in Atlanta years before it became an industry mecca and even got acquitted there for shooting a pair of off-duty police officers. Before being slain on a sweltering 1996 night in Las Vegas, he’d written “To Live and Die in LA,” which has mercifully replaced “I Love LA,” as the City of Angel’s municipal anthem.

None of this accounts for the random sidebars, including a lifelong bond forged with Jada Pinkett at a Baltimore Arts school (a friendship that later made Will Smith feel some kind of way). During time spent in New York filming Above the Rim, he forged alliances with holy terror Haitian Jack and Madonna and Mickey Rourke. While incarcerated on sexual assault charges, 2Pac became pen pals with Tony “Who’s the Boss” Danza. It’s been said that he was up for the role of Bubba Gump. He wore “Versace Hook-Ups” before Biggie “copied his style” and decades before the Migos.

Before, during, and after interviews for the book I co-wrote about 2Pac and Biggie, I was given different reasons to explain his legacy. Some said that he was the greatest rapper ever because he was the only one intellectually and stylistically rich enough to teach a college course on. Others couldn’t articulate it; they just pounded on their chest and said, Pac “hits me right here.”

You can point to a young Boosie “spitting that real” in the studio, 2Pac poster hanging from the wall as a reminder. Or Gibbs or Jeezy or DMX or Eminem or Wayne or whoever. Ja Rule had the “Pain is Love” tattoo on his arm; 2Pac radiated it.

Maybe Biggie was right when he told VIBE in 1995 that the last years of 2Pac’s life essentially had him method-acting Bishop from Juice. But bodies under your belt matter less than hearts won over. His voice bled. He cried without seeming soft. He avoided the simple binaries that shackled many of his imitators.

One anecdotal conversation with Kyambo “Hip-Hop” Joshua, the current Executive Vice President of Def Jam, stuck with me. He said that he’d found that 2Pac spoke to young kids of this generation in a way that Biggie couldn’t. His messages were more simple and direct. The closest thing that rap has to a Bob Marley. Maybe they weren’t the most skilled the genre has to offer, but they were the best at capturing the blood-simple basics that connect every human. He never lost the don’t-give-a fuck-sneer and volatility of being a teenager. Slang and sonics become dated, but hate and love never go out of style.

Hence, these recently discovered poems. They’re essentially bonus tracks of the Rose That Grew From Concrete era, confused teenage blurts that spoke to the core of who he was. The layers are there. The mask isn’t. They won’t replace Leaves of Grass anytime soon, but they’re unvarnished primary sources from one of the greatest ever. As a post-adolescent, he attempted to figure out what to give and what to keep to keep to himself. They’re sad and lonely signals from a seeker who never lived long enough to find what he was searching for. You can see the corny romantic and the bitter skeptic, the outsider waiting to be accepted. You can see yourself. Maybe.

Brown Racial Struggles: Domestic Violence Abuse Death of Brown Woman Ignored in Delaware? PDF Print E-mail
Written by DD

http://mediad.publicbroadcasting.net/p/kstx/files/201310/domestic_violence_awareness_month.jpg

October is supposed to be domestic violence awareness month -- but that does not seem to be the case in Bear, Delaware, when a pregnant woman of 6 months was reported being beat and hospitalized.  The hospital staff was able to save the 6 month preemie baby.  A presser was issued by the New Castle County police department notifying media of the hospitalization, however, no presser was conducted regarding the woman's death beyond their October 20, 2014, communications.  Information regarding festivals, square dances and the like were discovered on the New Castle County PD press release page, but we could not locate news of the death -- only by word of mouth.

Had agencies or news outlets reported the death of this young lady, the giving hearts of American people may have learned faster how to help the now motherless baby with resources to help pay for the expense of a funeral and preemie baby needs.  Since the immigrant woman died on October 29th, 2014, it would have given Bear, Delaware, the chance to educate the people in their region the horrors of domestic violence and how it may sometimes lead to a tragic death and story.  We believe more and more people should look for possible signs in helping those who are suffering from domestic abuse and we should be better with this sort of education to this regard.

According to the surviving members of the woman who was abused to death:

Paola Eden Delagado Polanco was a young thriving girl and full of life, with charming simplicity and humility. She died October 29 at her 21 years as a victim of domestic violence  caused by her boyfriend in Bear, Delaware. Paola was six months pregnant, and by a miracle the baby survived. God has plans for all of us and Paola is now in the kingdom of heaven with our Heavenly Father. She was beautiful, but her inner beauty was far more radiant than her physical attractiveness. We urge support for funeral expenses and to send her body to rest in her home town of Puente de Camotlan Nayarit, Mexico. We also ask for your help in the expenses for her premature baby girl who has a long journey ahead of her. Thank you and may God bless you .

- The Delgado Polanco Family

As legal immigration reform supporters, we ought to consider how the anti-immigrant sentiment fueled by Republican bigotry (when they adopted self deportation ideas with the blessing of Kris Kobach) contributed to the dehumanization of immigrants.  Could the sentiment contributed to nonchalant reporting because some view immigrants as less than human or as an equal?

It is shameful Delaware Online did not report this abuse and death leaving behind a precious innocent baby in need of community support when the mother died on October 29 and during Domestic Violence Awareness month.

As we embark Dia de los Muertos, may word of mouth and social media be sufficient to help the needs of the grieving family and the surviving 6 month preemie that is currently hospitalized.  We implore those who can give to give what theyu can to help this family -- even if it is $5.00 because a little will go a long way collectively. It is a miracle the baby survived.

Arizona Democratic Party Dirty Halloween Trick Could Backfire On Rep. Kyrsten Sinema

IMG_8405

Recently, the Arizona Democratic Party (ADP) launched a dirty trick in time for Halloween that comes with no treat for Libertarian voters.  The ADP strategy could have worked a couple of cycles ago, but maybe not this time – particularly when Libertarian Mike Shipley filed recall papers against her last year.  Though the Secretary of State spokesman  said he would not order a recall election in Sinema’s case because the congresswoman is not bound by the state’s recall law, the Libertarian group still wants to invalidate her seat.  In light of the controversial mail out by the ADP, Shipley said: “Don’t underestimate Libertarians because we are here to stay.”

Political dirty tricks happen within both the Republican Party and the Democratic Party, but the ADP has sunken to an all new low this time.  It appears ADP’s arrogance with regard to Congressional District 9 underscores their belief that CD9 voters are politically under educated.

According to AZ Central:

“Obviously we prefer Kyrsten Sinema,” said Quinlan. But “our calculation is there are probably a lot of conservative voters who realize (Gammill) is a far more consistent conservative than Wendy Rogers. … We’re pretty much taking (Gammill’s) positions directly from his website and sharing them.”

We implore key swing independent voters of Arizona (now largest voting bloc) to teach Rep. Kyrsten Sinema a lesson specifically in Congressional District 9.  We also implore Sinema’s Latino and Chicano Democratic voting constituents to vote anyone but Sinema and recall to their memory her flip flop on immigration Carlos Galindo exposes repeatedly on his national political talk radio program.  Galindo is a former liberal now registered independent voter of Arizona.

Galindo wrote:

It appears Andiola’s recent departure from Sinema’s employ may have been a forced departure, based on pressure that was placed on Sinema and her congressional office for hiring a staffer who is supportive of an Immigration “advocate” who spews anti-USA rhetoric. Just as important, according to sources, Andiola was a $50,000 a year congressional office staffer allegedly mooching for money to take a trip to Washington with her mom. See screenshot below.

ADP’s DJ Quinlan is banking on his perception of naïve Republicans believing Powell Gammill is more “conservative” than Wendy Rogers when in fact, Libertarian candidate Powell Gammill is for open borders.  It is also well known how Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema flip flopped on the immigration issue; where she gets tough on immigration on one day — while reversing her view on another day.  Unfortunately and the problem we have with Sinema is voters will not know what they will get with her in light of her many reversals and stances to include criticism with regard to her  exploiting veterans and Latinos.

Make no mistake, our group to include independent registered women, Chicanos, and Latinos want legal immigration reform.  We do not want to be used as political footballs, and while the ADP gave Sinema a free pass to the SB1225 regard, our informed community will not give her one nor will we allow her to forget it.

Be Sure To Contact Your State Bar Association To Verify Credentials of an Attorney PDF Print E-mail
Written by DD

It's always a good idea to double check with your State Bar Association to verify an attorney's credentials.

Citizens for Better Arizona (CBA) (an operation run by the likes of Randy Parraz and Chad Snow) has come under tremendous fire recently from the Carlos Galindo show.  Outside media is unaware of the many Chicanos and Mexican Americans who are not in support of Citizens For Better Arizona operations for their lack of transparency, in fact if you tune into the Carlos Galindo show, you will find him exposing this organization over and over and over again.

This is not the first time, CBA has been under fire.  CBA was under fire for raising money to the last day of their failed Arpaio Recall Effort even though they knew they did not have enough signatures to recall Arpaio.  It became worse when CBA then claimed they shredded the signatures for the failed Arpaio recall and would not be transparent with their operations though they consistently peddled for money.  Recall efforts cost Arizona tax payer dollars and this is touchy situation for Independent voters who are fiscally responsible and do NOT believe in operations that fail before they begin.

In addition, we believe it is disingenuous to be listed as an attorney without first passing the bar exam.  We went to the State Bar of Arizona to find out if Randy Parraz is an attorney, and the Bar does not list him as one.

Parraz is also listed as an attorney under AVVO in Arizona, but the Arizona Bar does not list him as a practicing attorney. That said, the Yellow Pages also lists "Randy Parraz for senate" under the workman's comp lawyer section tying the address to Carpio and Snow. Parraz is a public figure. It's high time he get transparent the same way we expect out of every other official. Particularly when dark money operations is involved!

Therefore, why is Parraz being listed as one here and here?
