Elaine Brown is scheduled to hold a press conference and officially open her campaign headquarters on May 19 at 10:00 a.m.

In an effort to become the first black and first woman mayor of the predominantly-black port city of Brunswick, Georgia, Elaine Brown, author and former chairman of the Black Panther Party, will formally announce her candidacy on May 19^th, the birthday of Malcolm X, at 10:00 a.m. at her campaign headquarters at 2802 Altama Avenue in Brunswick.

Under the campaign slogan "Empowering the People! Sharing the Wealth!" Brown says she wants to displace "the Confederate establishment" as much as the present administration wants to displace the black population of Brunswick:

"I intend to uproot the long-established, white-dominated power base of this Republican stronghold, represented by the present mayor, a proud Lt. Col. in the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and replace it with an administration that serves the people.  I intend to eliminate the City's present economic development plan of gentrification and institute a program for redevelopment that does not require the mass removal of black and poor people."

Although the race is non-partisan, it is expected that Brown, who has become a member of the Green Party, will face strong opposition by a Republican-backed candidate for the upcoming, November 2005, election.  The present mayor, barred from seeking a third term, was heavily supported by the Republican Party and the Sea Island Co. -- broker of the Bush-hosted G-8 Summit of 2004.  Brunswick is the seat of Glynn County, which is represented up and down, in the U.S. Senate and House, as well as in the Georgia Senate and House, by Republicans.
